Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Guidelines for the Hospitalized Patient
  Kenneth E. Graham, D.O.
    K.E. Graham
    3rd Edition (2003)

Dr. Graham's book on the use of OMT for the hospitalized patient is certainly a must-read for the serious student.  It contains hard-won lessons by a physician who makes his living providing manipulative medicine therapies to hospitalized patients.   The compilation of this material is difficult, making the read a bit repetitive at times, but the information contained within the pages is pure gold.

This remarkable little book is a comprehensive collection of counterstrain treatments for the entire body.  It contains text detailing the theoretic and functional basis of counterstrain treatment.  Additionally, it contains a detailed description of the treatment techniques for each counterstrain point of the body.  It is an excellent reference for the professional.

Osteopathic Considerations in Systemic Dysfunction
  Michael L. Kuchera, D.O., F.A.A.O.
  William A. Kuchera, D.O., F.A.A.O
    Greyden Press, Columbus, OH
    Revised 2nd Edition (1994)

This book provides the reader a method for attempting to understand the relationship of OMT to the medically ill patient.  It is well footnoted, providing a strong academic basis for its contentions, and also provides treatment goals and guidelines for the application of OMT in the treatment of systemic disease.  The flow of thoughts in the book are occasionally tangled, making it somewhat difficult to comprehend in a casual setting.  Nevertheless, the academic references that this book contains will make it useful to the serious student of OMT.

OMT Review, A Comprehensive Review in Osteopathic Medicine

  John D. Capobianco, D.O., F.A.A.O, Chapter Editor
James J. Cox, Jr., D.O., COMLEX Question Editor
    2003

This is a very popular OMT board review book.  It provides a wide-ranging review of the basics of OMT, as well as copious board review questions for students to practice for their boards.  It is clearly organized for this purpose.  This board review orientation makes this book most appropriate for those who are studying for the boards, and will significantly limit the utility of this book for the seasoned osteopathic physician interested in furthering their OMT capacities.

  Stanley Hoppenfeld, M.D.
    Appleton & Lange, Norwalk CT
    1976

This book is an amazingly concise and clinically-oriented text for anyone attempting to learn how to perform physical examination of the spine and extremities.  It details the process of examination from observation to palpation to neurologic evaluation, with attention provided to such special tests as may be applicable to each part of the body being discussed.  It offers a thorough treatment of the subject matter, without being overbearing.  It is very well written, and would make a fine addition for anyone interested in this aspect of medicine.
