Counterstrain Treatment of the Anterior Tenth Thoracic - First Lumbar Tenderpoints


Point location: AT10: Level of L3, 2 cm. below the umbilicus and 3 cm. lateral from midline. AT11: Approximately at McBirney's Point, 6 cm below the umbilicus and 3 cm lateral from midline. AT12: Superior point of iliac crest, midaxillary line. AL1: 1 cm. from the projection of the medial surface of the anterior superior iliac spine.
Patient and doctor positioning: Patient is supine. On the ipsilateral side of the patient, the doctor stands, his caudad foot placed upon the table.
Prescribed action: These points are treated with severe flexion to the level of the dysfunction; with sidebending and rotation of the lower body toward the tenderpoint.
Follow through: After being passively returned to a neutral position, the patient should be reevaluated.
